Biochemistry
Chemistry is often referred to as the "central science" because of its pivotal role in all sciences dealing with matter, including biology, geology, physics, psychology, engineering, and medicine. As a chemistry student, you'll get a fundamental understanding of the structure, transformation and the uses of matter at the molecular level, as well as experimental and theoretical methods of research. As a biochemistry student, you'll explore the chemistry of living systems and the experimental techniques used to understand them as you prepare for medical or dental school, graduate study or a career.
  • Get a big reaction from faculty-directed research projects that help you learn to analyze data and create new chemical knowledge.
  • Take practical classes that demonstrate the key relationship chemistry has to other natural sciences and applications of chemistry in medicine, engineering, business and law.
  • Intern with local companies or industrial and government research labs like the National Institutes of Health.
  • Study abroad in Mexico, Peru or England.
  • Get laboratory experience with modern equipment that allows you to solve complex technical problems.

The Biochemistry program includes courses like:
FrGeneral Chemistry
General Biology
SoOrganic Chemistry
Cellular, Molecular & Developmental Biology
Physics I and II
JrBiochemistry
Physical Chemistry
Molecular Biology of Eukaryotes
SrAdvanced Inorganic Chemistry
Chemistry Seminar
Biochemistry Research

These are examples of courses to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. A bachelor of arts degree is also available with slightly different requirements.

In addition to technical positions in industrial or governmental research labs, many chemistry graduates pursue advanced study in chemistry, medicine, law, journalism and business. While some biochemistry graduates take top entry-level jobs, most recent grads enter medical or dental school. TCU's best biochemistry students often enter prestigious M.D. - Ph.D. programs like Duke or Stanford with the long-term goal of doing biomedical research in a medical school setting.
