English
The best writing, says E. M. Forster, exists to “wake us up,” to stimulate, inform, move, provoke us—even transform our worldviews. As a major, you will hone critical thinking skills by analyzing literary texts, films, periodicals, arguments, and new media while also learning to produce your own best writing.
  • Encounter some of the most exciting fiction, essays, poems, and dramas produced in English and translation, past and present, by diverse cultures and authors
  • Engage in interdisciplinary studies, since literature intersects with historical developments, the visual arts, popular culture, philosophy, science, politics, and publishing practices
  • Strengthen your writing skills through advanced work in rhetoric, personal essays, professional writing, and creative writing
  • Intern with publishing houses and local businesses
  • Prepare for a variety of careers by mastering close reading and sensitivity to nuanced language, argument and persuasion, cultural analysis, and familiarity with a variety of literatures
